Breaking: Michigan signs 2024 Texas 3-Star WR

Michigan State has received a commitment from 2024 Nacogdoches, (TX) three-star wide receiver Jaylan Brown.

Jaylan Brown, a three-star wide receiver from Nacogdoches, Texas, has committed to Michigan State after making an official visit to East Lansing this weekend.

Michigan State wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins and running backs coach Keith Bhonapha discovered Brown late in the recruiting process and offered him on January 17th. From there, things moved swiftly in Brown’s recruitment, as both parties quickly scheduled an official visit for the 6-foot-3, 185-pound wide receiver to experience the Michigan State campus and facilities firsthand.

The visit was the final element Brown needed to see to ensure that leaving Texas for Michigan was the right move, but Brown had always thought that Michigan State would be the best fit since receiving the offer from Hawkins and the Spartans.

It puts him on one of college football’s largest platforms, competing in the Big Ten for a coaching staff that has a track record of developing players and moving them up the ranks. For the Spartans, it is the second year in a row that they have found a quality wide receiver from Texas who was mostly unknown until late. Hawkins’ 2023 recruiting class includes Jaelen Smith, a three-star wide receiver from Houston, Texas, who is expected to make an impact after redshirting last season.

He already has a link to the program; his uncle, Sean Cooper, is the owner of C4 Sports Performance. He trains great players from Texas and Oklahoma, including Bai Jobe, who signed with Michigan State during the past recruiting season. Cooper considers it a significant achievement to see Brown’s ambitions and hard work realized.

“The feelings are really emotional. I grew up in the same house as his mother, and his uncle died last year. He was my best friend since kindergarten, and one thing I always told him was that I’d always make sure to help his nephew before he died. Now that he’s gone, it’s even more of a deliberate mission, and Jaylen had a long recruiting and great senior year, and I couldn’t be happier that he’ll be there with Bai; it’s destiny.”

Brown caught 55 passes as a senior, totaling 908 yards and 11 touchdowns.247Sports gives him a decent 87 grade and ranks him as the No. 116 wide receiver in the class. He is raw at the moment, but he has a high ceiling due to his really powerful ball abilities and great body control. He also plays basketball, which is most likely why he has such tremendous body control and the ability to go up and get the ball.

He does not rely solely on his ability to outjump everyone at 50/50 balls. He also demonstrates a solid ability to obtain a rapid release from his defender off the line of scrimmage, make contested catches in tight windows, and has excellent acceleration, allowing him to break from the defense after the catch and gain more yards.

Brown becomes the third wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class. He joins Detroit’s Nick Marsh (four-star) and Cleveland’s Austin Clay (three-star).

Brown brings the number of commits for the 2024 class to 21. Except for Jadyn Walker, who appears to be flipping his pledge to USC, everyone else in the class signed in December.

However, Walker and the Spartans are still in close touch. Even if Walker reverses his promise, Michigan State appears to be on track to secure at least 20 talents for their 2024 recruiting class. That figure appeared practically unachievable when Smith came on November 28th, with the Spartans just having seven prospects, including Walker.
