Breaking: Michigan is set to add a defensive analyst to its staff with links to LaMar Morgan

Louisiana’s quality control coach, Lionel Stokes, is set to join the Wolverines.

The Michigan Wolverines’ defensive staff appears to have been finalized, but the team is expected to add another coach.

247Sports reports that Louisiana quality control coach Lionel Stokes will shortly join Michigan’s staff as a defensive analyst. Stokes worked closely with new defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan last season, and he is expected to do so again in Ann Arbor.

Stokes previously worked with the corners at Nicholls State and coached at Jackson State for three years (two as defensive backs and one as defensive coordinator) from 2017 to 2019.

Stokes was a two-year starting safety at Louisiana from 2010 to 2011, following which he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.

Stokes’ hire will not lead to the creation of any talk shows or websites, but he may play an important role. Last season, Doug Mallory was an analyst for the secondary and played an important role in slowing down some of college football’s top passing offenses.

Mallory has recently joined the Baltimore Ravens as defensive backs coach, allowing the much younger Stokes to take over the post. Morgan and Moore probably believe Stokes will step in right away and help complement the defensive game-planning responsibilities.
