Breaking: Ipswich Town eyeing rival’s coach as Kieran McKenna’s replacement

Ipswich Town may already be planning for Kieran McKenna’s eventual departure.

The Tractor Boys have benefited greatly from having the former Manchester United coach on their side, with the 37-year-old stabilising the club after Paul Cook’s departure before leading them back to the Championship.

Following their spectacular promotion-winning campaign last season, a midtable position this term could have been viewed as a significant accomplishment, with Ipswich needing to adjust to a higher level.

Not only did some outstanding clubs rise, but three extremely talented sides fell from the Premier League.

Despite the league’s strength this season, the Tractor Boys have spent much of the season in the top two and are in contention for automatic promotion.

Considering they aren’t as good on paper as many of their other promotion competitors, McKenna has done an outstanding job and deserves a lot of credit, regardless of whether his team can win back-to-back promotions.

However, success invites interest, and McKenna is expected to attract even more interest in the coming months, unless the Suffolk side suffers a significant collapse.

Interest in Kieran McKenna

According to Bild, Bundesliga team Stuttgart is interested in signing the Northern Irishman, making them the latest club to be connected with him.

That would be a fantastic move for the 37-year-old, who is still in the early stages of his management career but has the potential to manage in one of Europe’s top leagues.

He has also piqued the interest of Premier League clubs, with Crystal Palace mentioned more than once before to Oliver Glasner’s hiring at Selhurst Park.

McKenna may possibly replace Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton and Hove Albion if the latter leaves at any time, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the 37-year-old left Ipswich.

He deserves the interest that he has reportedly attracted – and may move away from Portman Road sooner rather than later if an attractive offer comes in.

Danny Rohl could be the perfect Kieran McKenna replacement at Ipswich Town

Sheffield Wednesday were yet to win a league game in the 2023/24 season when Danny Rohl arrived in October.

With this in mind, and the fact that the team was at the bottom of the second tier, the rookie coach had a significant challenge in his attempt to turn things around at Hillsborough.

However, he has already worked with some really outstanding players, having previously served as a coach for the Germany national team and collaborated closely with Hans Flick.

And Rohl has done a fantastic job in South Yorkshire thus far, despite his team’s current relegation status.

He may have lost more games than he has won, but the Owls were once hopeless, and the 34-year-old has done an excellent job of turning things around at such a young age.

Rohl may even be an excellent alternative for McKenna, as he has established himself as a good coach in the EFL and has the ability to turn around a struggling team.

If he can do that with a previously struggling squad, he may do an exceptional job with one that has excelled for much of the 2023/24 season.

The Owls now lack a great deal of stability, as fans and owner Dejphon Chansiri do not get along well.

Ipswich might provide him with that stability, and you believe a move to Portman Road would entice him, especially if the Owls fail to win.
