After returning home from his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Idaho defensive lineman Boyd Sorenson committed to the BYU football team.

Sorenson, who attended Sugar-Salem High School in Sugar City, Idaho, committed to BYU’s defensive coordinator, Jay Hill. Sorenson didn’t specify in his introduction, but he’ll most likely enter the program as a preferred walk-on. Given Sorenson’s recent return, it’s likely that he’ll be requested to grayshirt in 2024 before joining the program in January 2025. To avoid harm, BYU prefers to grayshirt missions that return home in the summer.

Sorenson participated in a variety of sports during his high school years. He was listed at 6’4 and 250 pounds and excelled at football and track. He also played basketball. As a First Team All-State defensive lineman, he recorded over 100 tackles, more than 30 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks. He typically lined up as a defensive tackle, although he occasionally played stand-up defensive end. On offense, he played some fullback in a triple option system.

He earned First Team All-State honors in both the discus and the shotput. As a senior, he competed in and won the BYU Decathlon. You may see some of his senior highlights below.

Boyd graduated high school as an uncommitted prospect seeking a place at the next level. He had visited BYU several times, but it wasn’t until after his service that he committed to the Cougars.
