Breaking: Former Ravens LB Pernell McPhee signs Michigan coaching staff

Pernell McPhee, a former Ravens linebacker, will rejoin Wink Martindale’s coaching staff at Michigan.

Pernell McPhee, a former Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman, has found a new role in college football.

It has been announced that McPhee will assist the Michigan Wolverines’ defensive staff.

McPhee played seven seasons for the Ravens and 11 seasons in the NFL, totaling 38 sacks as an outside linebacker before retiring following the 2021 season.

From 2019 to 2021, Baltimore’s 2011 fifth-round pick played for Michigan’s new defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale. Following the signing, former Ravens starting offensive tackle Matt Skura commented on the move.

“Excellent hire! “I was fortunate to be his teammate, and Phee has an infectious personality that will energize the players, staff, and organization,” Skura wrote on X.

Michigan recently won its first national championship in 26 years, thanks in large part to their strong defense. This defense is expected to continue to dominate with the arrival of McPhee, who was reported to have teaching abilities during his stint in the NFL.

Interestingly, McPhee won a Super Bowl by defeating Michigan’s championship head coach, Jim Harbaugh, when he won with the Ravens in 2013 and beat Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers.

Harbaugh will not lead Michigan for the first time in eight years next season after returning to the NFL this offseason to take over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Martindale and McPhee will try to assist the Wolverines win their second consecutive National Championship, a feat not accomplished by a Big Ten club since Nebraska in 1994 and 1995.
