Breaking: Former Ipswich player departs from team

David Stockdale, former Ipswich Town goalkeeper, is now a free agent after leaving National League club York City.

The 38-year-old joined the Minstermen last summer after being released by Sheffield Wednesday, combining playing duties with a role as the club’s head of recruitment.

He appeared in four league games as York struggled in the 2023/24 season, ending 20th in the fifth division.

A club statement read: “York City can confirm the immediate departure of David Stockdale and Matthew Lever from their positions at the Football Club.

“York City places on record, despite it not working out in the end for all parties involved, its thanks to both staff members for their efforts during a difficult campaign and wishes them both well in their future endeavours.”

Stockdale has already hinted he might not want to hang up his gloves just yet, saying on X, formerly Twitter: “Well…. Anyone need a GK…..”

He spent the first half of the 2011/12 season on loan from Fulham, making 11 appearances at Portman Road.
