Breaking: Ex Receiver For Texas Commits To Oregon Ducks

Evan Stewart, a former Texas A&M football player, has moved to the Northwest.

Evan Stewart, Texas A&M football’s third-leading receiver in 2023, joined the portal a few weeks ago. Though Texas fans had hoped for this outcome since he committed to the Maroon and White in 2021, the Longhorns, despite being able to offer ample playing time after losing their top five pass-catchers heading into 2024, were unable to land Stewart, who has committed to the Oregon Ducks.

Stewart appeared in eight games for the Aggies last season, totaling 514 yards on 38 grabs and four touchdowns. This was a bit of a letdown following a freshman season in which he had 649 yards on 53 receptions and two touchdowns in ten games. Despite a rise in the number of scores, all other numbers decreased.

Stewart is undeniably gifted physically and technically, but it was unusual to see him break off a massive run after catch while in College Station. Even when he was targeted, which he was frequently (leading the team in receptions per game in both seasons), he was frequently unable to convert those skills into the big play.

Fans will recall his lengthy touchdown receptions against New Mexico and Auburn, as well as two magnificent catches versus Ole Miss in 2022, but Evan struggled to establish consistency at College Station. Stewart’s lack of productivity on a large amount of targets became increasingly unsettling as the season progressed, especially as Jahdae Walker emerged.

Stewart will join an offensive that will hopefully utilize his skill set. Will Stein is a promising rookie coordinator who employs his receivers in a variety of ways, including a large number of screens. If Evan can find his flow, he’ll be a major threat in the Big 10.
