Breaking: Colts Land Seven Rookies

After adding nine rookies through the draft, the Colts are still adding first-year players to their roster.

The team announced that they have signed seven undrafted free agents, including two quarterbacks:

  • Jason Bean, QB/WR (Kansas)
  • Trent Pennix, RB (NC State)
  • Spencer Shrader, K (Notre Dame)
  • Kedon Slovis, QB (BYU)
  • Dalton Tucker, G (Marshall)
  • Xavier White, WR (Texas Tech)
  • Craig Young, LB (Kansas)

Surprisingly, the Colts classified former Kansas signal caller Jason Bean as both a quarterback and wide receiver. That’s hardly surprising given the rookie’s running abilities. Bean had 901 yards and nine touchdowns on 178 carries during his three seasons at Kansas. With Anthony Richardson at the top of the depth chart and Joe Flacco as the backup, Bean’s best chance at making the team will almost certainly come at a different position. Kedon Slovis will face a similar uphill climb to join the Indy roster. The quarterback had an up-and-down college career, with his 30-touchdown season as a rookie in 2019 being his career high. He most recently played eight games at BYU, throwing 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Spencer Shrader, among all the UDFAs, has the best chance of making the team, as the rookie will fight with veteran Matt Gay for the Colts’ regular kicker slot. Shrader concluded his college career with a 68.3 percent field goal conversion rate, but he was 156-for-158 on extra point attempts.
