Breaking: Braves Outfielder Struck With Injury

Just as the Atlanta Braves offense appeared to be resurgent, another injury in their outfield occurred.

Michael Harris II left Friday night’s 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays due to left hamstring soreness. Following a leadoff single in the first, Harris advanced to third on an Ozzie Albies double and was plainly in agony. He departed the game shortly later and was replaced by J.P. Martinez, who played the rest of the game. Harris will get an MRI on Saturday, but he has already been placed on the 10-day disabled list.

Another Braves Outfielder Snakebit With Injury

Prior to Harris’s injury on Friday, it appeared that the center fielder was finding his groove. His single in the first inning brought his hitting streak to five games. Harris is slicing. This season, he has a 250/.295/.358 batting line with five home runs and an 84 wRC+ through 67 games. Another topic that the Braves will have to address is the leadoff slot in the lineup. Since Ronald Acuña Jr.’s injury, Harris has been splitting time with Ozzie Albies and was the leadoff option against right-handed pitching. Albies, a switch hitter, appears to be the most likely leadoff batter.

Former Oakland Athletic Reuniting With Olson and Murphy

With Harris on the 10-day injured list, the Braves added outfielder Ramon Laureano to their major league roster. With this move, the Braves officially placed right-handed pitcher Spencer Strider on the 60-day disabled list. This trade created an open slot on the 40-man roster.

Laureano began the season on the Cleveland Guardians’ roster, but was removed after 31 games. He was dismissed on May 25 after hitting only.143/.265/.603, with one home run and four RBI. Four days later, on May 29, Atlanta signed Laureano to a minor-league contract. The Braves appear to be going with the hot hand, as Laureano has been on fire at Triple-A Gwinnett. In 14 games, he is hitting.362/.424/1.027, with three home runs in 58 at-bats.

With his promotion return to the major leagues, Laureano will be greeted by familiar acquaintances in the clubhouse. Matt Olson and Sean Murphy were teammates with Laureano on the Oakland Athletics. All three played together from 2019 to 2021, with Olson being the first to join Atlanta in 2022.
