Breaking: Braves catcher likely back at the start of next week

It seems that d’Arnaud will avoid the 7 day concussion IL.

The Braves received a scare Wednesday night when starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud was forced to exit the game in the fifth inning due to dizziness. After the game yesterday night, Braves manager Brian Snitker said that d’Arnaud will not start on Saturday to give him time to heal. With d’Arnaud’s concussion history (four in his career), you can understand Atlanta’s cautious approach when he doesn’t feel 100% behind the plate.

So Chadwick Tromp, their third catcher, will make the start today. D’Arnaud and Tromp have caught every game since primary starter Sean Murphy suffered an oblique injury on Opening Day. Atlanta increased their catching depth by adding veteran Sandy León in early April.

d’Arnaud has had a solid 2024 season so far, with a.255/.336/.500 line. His five home runs outnumber the prominent sluggers at the top of the lineup as well. Tromp has performed admirably in his limited role, slashing.211/.225/.316 and providing consistent defense in 15 games.

It was revealed earlier this week that main catcher Sean Murphy will begin his rehab assignment early next week. Things appear to be falling into place for one of baseball’s best catching tandems to reunite soon. If d’Arnaud returns early next week, he may just have to hold down the fort until the end of the month.

If Murphy can begin his rehabilitation next week and return to Atlanta before the end of the month, he will receive a much-needed lift. It’s a comforting thought that, as d’Arnaud approaches the age of 35, the team will be able to provide Travis with the rest he needs. Keeping both catchers fresh down the stretch will be a key development for the 2024 season.
