Breaking: Blues wideman has withdrawn from national team squad

The FAW has reported that Blues wideman Wes Burns has withdrawn from Wales’ Euro 2024 play-off squad owing to a hamstring injury sustained during Saturday’s 6-0 thumping of Sheffield Wednesday.

Burns walked off after 38 minutes of the game against the Owls, and his departure is hardly surprising given that manager Kieran McKenna stated that the injury was unlikely to be minor.

“It doesn’t look great, it’s a hamstring,” McKenna remarked after the game. “It does not appear to be a minor one, and I do not believe it feels minor.

“Of course, we’ll scan it over the following several days and evaluate it, but that’s today’s undeniable low point.

“Everyone’s gutted for Wes down in the dressing room and we just have our fingers crossed that the severity isn’t as bad as it possibly could be.”

The Welsh, who finished third in their qualification group, face Finland at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday.

If they win that match, they will play either Poland or Estonia five days later for a spot in the championships in Germany next summer.

Nathan Broadhead and Kieffer Moore remain on the squad.
