Birmingham City may regard Heckingbottom as someone capable of leading them into the third division as they seek fast promotion.

The Yorkshireman played for Sunderland, Norwich City, and Sheffield Wednesday before retiring in 2012.

He subsequently began his managerial career at hometown club Barnsley, where he led them to promotion to the Championship in 2016 while also winning the EFL Trophy.

Heckingbottom was lured away from Oakwell in 2018 and spent two disappointing seasons at Leeds United and Hibernian.

He did, however, restore his reputation while at Sheffield United, when he led them to the Premier League after finishing second last season.

The Barnsley native was released by the Blades late last year after a disappointing run of form in the top division, but he has since become available.

Birmingham City managerial latest

Heckingbottom was managing at the highest level last year, so if he makes the transfer, Birmingham City will receive someone with a good pedigree.

The Blues might be an appealing assignment for him as he wants to go back in the dugout. Plymouth Argyle, however, are a higher-level alternative for him.

Birmingham City recently announced their retained list, confirming that Neil Etheridge, Gary Gardner, Scott Hogan, Marc Roberts, and Ivan Sunjic had been released.
