Braves try to complete a series win over Mets Thursday

Allan Winans, a right-hander, will make his Braves season debut against the Mets on Thursday.

The Atlanta Braves will seek to wrap up a weather-shortened three-game series against the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon. The Braves lost their opener Monday but won 6-5 on Tuesday. Due to the potential of bad weather, Wednesday’s game has been postponed until September. Both clubs decided to postpone their Wednesday starters for Thursday’s game. Atlanta’s young right-hander Allan Winans will make his season debut, while New York will start experienced lefty Jose Quintana.

Prior to the 2022 season, the Braves selected Winans in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft from the Mets. In 2023, he made six major league starts and had a 5.29 ERA and 4.09 FIP in 32 1⁄3 innings pitched. Winans made one start at Gwinnett before being called up, surrendering two runs and five strikeouts in 5 2⁄3 innings. Starting Winans on Thursday will provide an extra day of rest for the remainder of the rotation.

Quintana will make his second start of the season in Thursday’s game. In his debut start against the Brewers, he pitched 4 2⁄3 innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. The 35-year-old southpaw has played the Braves eight times in his career and has been pounded, yielding 30 earned runs in 40 innings (6.75 ERA).

The Braves have had no issue leaping out to early leads in the series, but they have failed to hold them. Atlanta squandered a 4-0 lead in Monday’s 8-7 defeat. They surged off to a 6-0 lead on Tuesday but had to cling on for a 6-5 victory. Despite starting well, the Braves’ bullpen has struggled in the series, giving up 9 runs in 6 1⁄3 innings.

Despite a poor start in the first 10 games of the season, Ronald Acuña Jr. demonstrated his significant impact on the game Tuesday night. In Tuesday’s triumph, Acuña had four base hits, three runs scored, and three steals. Atlanta has been out-homered 4-1 in the series.

The first pitch on Thursday is at 12:20 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Bally Sports South.
