On Sunday, the Atlanta Braves selected Saguaro High School outstanding pitcher Cam Caminiti with the 24th overall choice in the first round of the MLB draft.
Caminiti, who was born in Scottsdale, led Saguaro to a state championship this season as a pitcher and outfielder. The southpaw posted a 0.93 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 52.2 innings.
He is the cousin of Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP who played 15 seasons in the major leagues but died in 2004 before the draftee was born.

Caminiti is only 17 years old when he reclassified for 2024.
He was Arizona’s 2024 Player of the Year and the first high school pitcher selected. He is 6-foot-2 and weighs 195 pounds, and his fastball can reach the upper 90s.
The Arizona native has committed to play collegiate football at LSU.
The Braves have been a consistent postseason competitor, having made the playoffs in each of the previous six seasons.
