Braves receive more good news for Atlanta’s All-Star third baseman injury

The Braves are preparing for the second of three games against the Cubs at Truist Park, and Austin Riley is out for the second game in a row.

Atlanta’s All-Star third baseman was pulled from Sunday’s game early due to tightness in his abdomen, but Brian Snitker downplayed the severity of the injury.

He wasn’t in the lineup against the Cubs last night because he awoke hurting in the morning, prompting an MRI that revealed only inflammation. Riley appeared to have avoided an IL stint, which was confirmed today.

Snitker told Atlanta media that Austin Riley felt “much better” and was even “having trouble finding the spot that’s sore in his side,” according to David O’Brien of The Athletic.

Zack Short started in Riley’s place last night and performed admirably on both offense and defense, knocking in a run and scoring one himself. The Braves are clearly expecting Austin Riley to return soon, but seeing Short stand up when called on is promising.
