Braves recall Darius Vines, send Allan Winans back to Triple-A

The season-long revolving door experiences some action once again.

The Braves have wasted little time getting a fresh arm on the roster ahead of tonight’s road trip opener in Miami.

Vines has had two disappointing outings at Triple-A, posting a 3.75 ERA, 4.80 FIP, and 4.51 xFIP. In 2023, he made his MLB debut and pitched 20 1⁄3 innings in two starts and three relief appearances, with a combined ERA of 90, FIP of 115, and xFIP of 127.

Personally, I’m not a big believer of Vines based on what we saw from him last year — his lack of velocity and mediocre cutter and four-seamer forms, plus with a lack of command, make it difficult for me to see how he’ll succeed in the majors. At this time, he also appears to be a replacement-level reliever, but I could be mistaken. But the good news is that the Braves don’t need him to succeed; they simply need him to eat innings if necessary.

Winans returns to Triple-A following yesterday’s conflagration. While the defense let him down, he was also quite bad in his own right, with only one strikeout and two walks. You cannot do that in five innings, not even against the Mets.
