Braves’ most MLB-ready prospect might be a shock

AJ Smith-Shawver, the Braves’ top prospect, returns to the major league roster tonight to face the Cubs.

It will be his first time pitching for Atlanta since Game 3 of last year’s NLDS. The expectation is that Smith-Shawver will show some promise and become a permanent part in the Braves rotation; yet, another prospect may be better prepared to do so later this year.

Spencer Schwellenbach got his second start for AA Mississippi on the farm Wednesday, and he did an excellent job. He pitched seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, and probably most impressively, he did not walk anyone.

Schwellenbach has not allowed a run in Mississippi’s two appearances, giving up only five hits and one walk while striking out 17 in 13 innings. He’s made eight starts this season between High-A Rome and AA Mississippi, posting a 1.80 ERA and 0.91 WHIP while striking out 51 batters in 45 innings.

The Braves are known for quickly moving their top players through the system, and Schwellenbach could be no exception this year. He’s an older prospect, turning 24 at the end of the month, and his professional career began late due to Tommy John surgery. Since his comeback, his run prevention has been exceptional, owing in great part to his control. He doesn’t give up many free passes, and his stuff is finally coming together as he misses a lot more bats this season.

AJ Smith-Shawver and Hurston Waldrep deservedly earned the most attention heading into the season following their accomplishments last year, but they’ve also had some setbacks early on, and development is never linear, especially when discussing pitching prospects. Don’t be surprised if you see Spencer Schwellenbach pitching for the Braves later this season.
