Braves make roster changes, bringing in versatile utility dude

The Atlanta Braves are tweaking the roster for defensive versatility reasons

In preparation for their weekend series against the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers, the Atlanta Braves have promoted utilityman Luke Williams from AAA Gwinnett.

Williams, 27, was obtained off waivers by the Atlanta Braves from the Los Angeles Dodgers in June 2023 and spent the most of the season on the active roster. Williams appeared in seven games and went hitless in nine at-bats while filling in as a pinch runner at first, third base (where he made his only start of the season), and left field.

It’s reasonable to believe the move was done for versatility reasons; in 133 major league appearances over three seasons, Williams has played every defensive position except catcher, throwing one inning for the Dodgers.

The following move was to option outfielder Forrest Wall to AAA Gwinnett. The Braves elected to reward Wall’s offseason preparation and spring training success with a spot on the Opening Day roster. Wall worked with Braves hitting instructors this winter and then hit.308/.400/564 in Grapefruit League play, including three home runs, three stolen bases, and ten RBIs in 39 at-bats.

However, Wall, Atlanta’s fifth outfielder, had only one at-bat in the first three weeks of the season, with Adam Duvall and Jarred Kelenic serving as the team’s primary pinch-hitters.

Last season, in a similar part-time position, Wall went 6-13 with one home run, two doubles, and six runs scored. He also went five for six on stolen base attempts as Atlanta’s primary pinch runner.

Optioning Wall to Gwinnett, which is currently without outfielders Skye Bolt and Eli White due to injuries, will allow him to get regular at-bats in case he is required in the majors.
