At the trade deadline, the Braves will most likely attempt to improve their outfield and shortstop positions.

The latter may be challenging, but finding numerous outfielders should not be. Alex Anthopoulos acquired four at the 2021 trade deadline, propelling the Braves to the World Series; I anticipate a similar approach this season.

None of Eddie Rosario, Joc Pederson, Jorge Soler, or Adam Duvall were high-profile acquisitions, as has traditionally been Anthopoulos’ style, but it appears Atlanta’s GM is looking for a big deal.

According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Braves, Phillies, and Mariners have expressed interest in Cody Bellinger. “They’ve also listened to teams such as the Phillies, Braves and Mariners who have interest in Cody Bellinger”

Bellinger was recently placed on the 10-day disabled list after being struck in the hand, but Rosario was injured when Atlanta traded for him in 2021, so I doubt this finger ailment would change Anthopoulos’ mind.

The former MVP isn’t performing as great as he did last season, but he’s still slicing.269/.331/.410 with a 109 wRC+ and the ability to provide outstanding outfield defense, fills the Braves’ most pressing need.

The Cubs have presumably not determined if they will sell at the deadline. If they stumble out of the All-Star break, I believe they will seriously consider dealing Bellinger.

His contract is what makes him a desirable trade partner. Cody Bellinger can opt out of his contract at the conclusion of the year for a $2.5 million buyout or $27.5 million in 2025, with an additional $25 million option and a $5 million buyout in 2026.

Much of that depends on how he finishes the 2024 season, but he could potentially fill a need for the Braves in 2025, since Ronald Acuna Jr. is unlikely to play in the outfield next season.

For a Braves club that values certainty, this does not appear to be their cup of tea, but stipulations can be put in place to protect themselves; Anthopoulos is normally a wizard with these things.
