Ozzie Albies, the Braves second baseman, broke his left wrist late in Sunday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals and is likely to miss around eight weeks.

Albies was injured while attempting to catch a throw after Michael Siani stole second in the ninth inning. Siani slid into Albies as the infielder lunged for the ball, bending his glove hand awkwardly.

Albies crouched in anguish on the field, clutching his left wrist. He was replaced at second base by Atlanta’s Zack Short.

Following their 6-2 setback, the Braves announced that X-rays confirmed a left wrist fracture, and Albies is anticipated to be out for about eight weeks.

The three-time All-Star is hitting.255 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs, almost all from the second slot in the batting order.

Atlanta’s lineup has suffered another setback, following the season-ending knee injury of reigning National League MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. in May.

Earlier in the day, the Braves placed All-Star pitcher Max Fried on the 15-day injured list for forearm neuritis, a nerve inflammation, retroactive to Thursday.

The Braves are chasing their third straight NL East title, trailing first-place Philadelphia by 8 1/2 games but holding the league’s top wild card.
