Brad Marchand ‘Definitely’ Plans To Have This Conversation With Bruins

Brad Marchand feels like it was only yesterday that he signed his most recent contract with the Boston Bruins.

However, it won’t be long until the franchise’s captain and team executives return to the negotiation table.

Marchand’s eight-year, $49 million contract, signed in September 2016, has only one season left, so the Bruins and the two-time All-Star are set to discuss an extension. Marchand was asked about such chats on Sunday, two days after the Boston Bruins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

“I can’t believe how quickly it came—that it’s now on the table,” Marchand told reporters, according to a team video. “Yes, there will be a conversation at some point. We’ll proceed from there. Obviously, I’ve been here my entire career and would love to continue. So we’ll handle it when the time comes.”

During the team’s end-of-season media availability, players expressed a wish to continue playing in Boston. Homegrown stars like Jake DeBrusk and Jeremy Swayman, as well as veteran journeymen like Pat Maroon, have expressed a desire to remain in a Black and Gold sweater.

Of course, Don Sweeney and his team cannot fulfill every player’s wishes. However, finding an agreement with a player as vital as Marchand is likely to be near the top of the team’s offseason priority list.
