Birmingham is reportedly eager to appoint Wayne Rooney as manager after John Eustace was fired

Despite a strong start to the season, Birmingham has fired head coach John Eustace, fueling speculation that former England captain Wayne Rooney may take over as manager.

Birmingham was saved by Eustace last season, and after a dramatic 3-1 derby victory over West Brom on Friday, the Blues are currently sixth in the Sky Bet Championship with 11 games remaining until the international break.

Despite acknowledging in a statement that Eustace had “helped to stabilise and strengthen the club” during his 15 months as manager, Birmingham has chosen to part ways with the former Republic of Ireland assistant.

A winning mindset and a culture of ambition must be implemented throughout the entire football club, according to a statement on Birmingham’s official website. “It is essential that the board of directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire football club,” the statement read.

In light of this, Birmingham City has fired head coach John Eustace.

The task of developing a brand and a distinct “no fear” playing style that all Birmingham City sides will embrace will fall under the purview of a new first-team manager, who will be revealed in the coming days.

In spite of off-field concerns over the club’s ownership, Eustace, who succeeded Lee Bowyer in July 2022, led Birmingham finish nine points above the drop zone in the second division.

Eustace’s position was reportedly in jeopardy over the weekend despite the club’s new American owners only having suffered three losses so far this season.

Rooney, a former striker for Manchester United, would appear to be a good fit after declaring on Sunday that he was quitting DC United after they missed the Major League Soccer play-offs.

According to statements attributed to him by the Washington Post, “It’s just the right time.”

“I have had a great time while here. However, I simply believe the moment is right to return to England. I have no idea what is coming.
