Birmingham has several plates whirling. – Mowbray

Birmingham City boss Tony Mowbray feels lots of things might still happen for the Championship club in the January transfer window despite being hampered by Financial Fair Play rules.

Blues were one of the Championship’s busiest players during the summer transfer window, signing 13 players following Tom Wagner’s purchase of the club in the United States.

However, new CEO Mowbray thinks there will still be things they can do.

“There’s lots of conversations, lots of plates spinning,” he told BBC Radio WM.

“We are excited about the recruitment side. More what I had imagined.

“We can’t spend millions, but we can rearrange a few things to make this and that happen.

“The group needs a little help in certain areas and, if we can improve that by adding a couple of players, whether it’s loan players or whatever, then that’s what we’ll try to do.”

Mowbray is coordinating with Blues technical director Craig Gardner to determine who may stay and who may leave, particularly in light of alleged Italian interest in Wales midfielder Jordan James.

“Craig Gardner is going to have a busy few weeks,” said Mowbray.

“He’s never off the phone taking calls about whether we might be able to do this, we might be able to do that, or what about this?”

One clear issue is Blues’ goal total of 32 in 27 league games.

Scott Hogan and veteran target man Lukas Jutkiewicz, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, have combined for just five goals, while eight-goal leading scorer Jay Stansfield likes to play off the front or out wide.

Although Mowbray believes that every side “needs” out-and-out strikers, he claims that the present roster is flexible.

“It’s not a case of putting all our eggs in one basket and only chasing number nines,” he told reporters.

“There are choices; we still have Scott Hogan, and Jay Stansfield has proved he can score down the middle.

“I’m just looking at what we’ve got and what is the best chance we’ve got to go and win games.”

Mowbray’s team has had a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea City and a 2-1 FA Cup third-round replay win over Hull City, both with late goals. This Saturday, they will face Stoke City, who are unbeaten in five league games under new manager Steven Schumacher.

“It could just be a case of keeping it tight,” Mowbray explained.

“That goes against the grain of what I do, yet clean sheets are the result of hard effort and planning. It’s about finding the correct balance.”
