Birmingham City Will Use £20 Million Transfer Budget

Birmingham City, a relegated former Championship side, is apparently set to seize entire control of the League One transfer market with a £20 million budget.

According to Alan Nixon, the recently relegated former Championship club is eager to support new manager Chris Davies in collecting the best talents required to develop a squad capable of returning to the second division at the first opportunity.

Their owners are apparently ready to put together a budget that will cover the fees and salary required to secure talent like Scott Twine.

The Burnley player is being pursued by Birmingham and Bristol City, and he was previously connected with Sunderland until their new manager was appointed yesterday.

A show of intent from the Blues?

The problem with claiming a large budget is that buying clubs know you have money to spend and will up their own asking price. While £20 million will get you any player in League One, possibly several times, it may not go as far as you think if the selling clubs seek for more.

Rotherham and Huddersfield have already shown a willingness to spend heavily this summer, with only two automatic slots and a play-off promotion available.

With teams like Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley, and Peterborough, as well as well-managed clubs like Lincoln City, wanting to climb the league, they may be left with a large salary bill and the risk of a second year in the third division if things don’t go as planned.

Money helps in promotion, but it is not a guarantee, as League One has been known to swallow up huge clubs that have been relegated from the Championship for several years before winning their way back.
