Birmingham City v Wrexham New York matchup raised over links between Tom Brady and Ryan Reynolds

Birmingham City’s match against Wrexham could become the first EFL game to be played in the United States.

That’s according to football finance specialist Dr Rob Wilson, director of VSI Executive Education, who points out that both clubs are owned by Americans and are currently League One rivals.

While Wrexham has a developing fan base on the other side of the Atlantic thanks to Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Blues are seeking to raise their reputation with the acquisition by Tom Wagner’s Knighthead firm and the involvement of NFL icon Tom Brady.

Wagner has ambitious aspirations to boost the Blues’ global profile, and Wilson believes this may include a trip to the United States.

“Wrexham vs Birmingham City is a good bet for the first Football League game to take place abroad,” Wilson said on www.olbg.com.

“According to data from the Customer Lifetime Value Group, tens of millions of football fans in the United States are undecided about which side to support. That is a really significant market.

“You’ve got high-profile American investors with a celebrity following at both Wrexham and Birmingham City, so holding a game in a place like San Diego or New York in an iconic arena could attract people and work. However, Wrexham currently have a considerably bigger profile than Birmingham City.

It is worth noting there is certainly no suggestion from anyone at Blues that this is even a prospect under consideration.
