Birmingham City to decide on transfer of player who is out of contract – Opinion

Birmingham City has chosen to loan Rico Patterson to National League North side Rushall Olympic for the rest of the season.

The midfielder signed a one-year contract in January 2023 after earning a scholarship in 2020, and the Blues will now decide whether he has a future at St Andrew’s based on his performance in senior games away from the club. He reunites with players such as Callum Sullivan and Rico Browne, who have been playing at Rushall.

Patterson is highly regarded and captained the under-18s squad before progressing to the under-21s. He has made 26 appearances for Steve Spooner’s side this season, scoring four goals to help them finish first in the Professional Development League North table.

“I am really excited to be able to get Rico on board,” said manager, Liam McDonald on the official club website.

“I have been after him for quite a while and now the time is right to bring him in.

“He’ll bring creativity in the final third as well as goals, just what we are looking for.

Patterson might be thrown into the mix when Rushall face Brackley Town at Dales Lane tonight (March 12). Rushall are ranked 20th in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football. They are one point above the relegation zone, with nine games remaining in the season.

Birmingham fans who want to witness Patterson play for his new team can do so during the international break, when the Blues are not in action. They play at home against relegation rivals Darlington on Saturday, March 23 at 3 p.m.
