Birmingham City have hired Amy Merricks as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

Merricks joins Birmingham City after most recently leading England’s Under-19 team. She succeeds former Blues manager Darren Carter, who left the position last week after more than two years in charge.

Merricks got coaching experience at his old club, Brighton & Hove Albion, in a variety of roles. During her stint with the Sussex club, she served as head coach of the development squad and assistant manager of the first team. The 30-year-old spent more than five years with Brighton & Hove Albion, where she worked alongside manager Hope Powell, who is currently Birmingham City’s women’s technical director.

With Birmingham City’s promotion aspirations over for another season, Merricks will be challenged with assembling a team capable of winning the Barclays Women’s Championship over her three years at St Andrew’s.

Merricks said after joining the Blues, “It’s an honour to join Birmingham City at this critical juncture in their history, and I’m excited to get right to work with such a talented group of players.”

“After hearing the ambitions of Garry Cook, Hope Powell and the Board, as well as knowing the steep history Birmingham already has in the women’s game, I was immediately attracted to the opportunity of driving this club forward and further than it has been before.”

Merricks begins work with Birmingham City on Tuesday morning.
