Birmingham City set to hijack formal Everton midfielder deal

Huddersfield Town’s second transfer might be hijacked by Birmingham City, as a League One midfielder is on the move.

Birmingham are apparently making another swoop under Huddersfield’s nose, this time for Bristol Rovers offensive midfielder Antony Evans.

The Blues completed the transfer of Alfie May from Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, taking the striker away from Huddersfield after the Terriers were in advanced talks. May, who led League One in goals last season with 23, has signed a three-year contract with the Blues.

Similar unhappiness is predicted for Huddersfield, as Blues Focus reports Birmingham have made an approach to sign Evans from Bristol Rovers. The 25-year-old was the subject of a rejected bid from Huddersfield just a few days ago, but Blues have surpassed that offer.

Evans, an Everton youth product, made 52 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 10 goals and assisting nine times. His greatest season was in 2021/22, when he scored 11 goals and assisted 14 others in 39 appearances, primarily in League Two.

Evans previously played for Crewe Alexandra, Blackpool, and Morecambe. There was also a year-long stint at German club SC Paderborn from January 2020 to January 2021, with only 10 appearances accumulated.

Portsmouth could cause Birmingham trouble

Portsmouth are reportedly interested in Evans, so this is more than just a League One trade war. Pompey, who were promoted to the Championship after winning the title, are serious about the midfielder.

Evans, who is in the final year of his Rovers deal, could be available for a low amount. However, Birmingham and Huddersfield’s interest may lead to a bidding battle.
