Birmingham City relegation scenarios: The Championship outcomes Blues need to maintain their place up

Birmingham City are preparing for a relegation battle against Huddersfield Town this Saturday.

Both teams are currently in the relegation zone and may be demoted this weekend if outcomes go against them. The Blues have done marginally better than Huddersfield in the first 44 games, collecting 46 points to the Terriers’ 44.

Sheffield Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers pulled them out of the bottom three and pushed Blues back into trouble. Plymouth Argyle and Blackburn Rovers are also not without problems.

Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers can still be relegated, although they both surpassed 50 points last weekend with victories against Plymouth and Preston, respectively. To drop Stoke or QPR down to League One, they would need to lose a lot of games. Teams in immediate danger include Huddersfield, Blues, Wednesday, Plymouth, and Blackburn.

Blues will stay up if…

While the Blues’ fate is effectively out of their hands now that they have fallen below the dotted line, they should be able to stay up if they win their next two games. A win over Huddersfield on Saturday would relegate the Terriers and put the Blues, who have a higher goal difference than Sheffield Wednesday, in contention for survival.

If the Blues win both games, they will stay up if Wednesday does not get six points from their fixtures against West Brom and Sunderland. Two Blues victories will also suffice for survival if Plymouth or Blackburn lose one of their remaining two games.

Blues will go down if…

The Blues have a small possibility of being demoted this weekend. If Huddersfield defeats Blues and Wednesday, Plymouth, and Blackburn all win, the team with the Second City’s name will begin the season in League One.

Wins for Wednesday, Plymouth, and Blackburn would put the Blues on the verge of relegation if they failed to overcome Huddersfield. A draw can relegate Huddersfield, but it cannot mathematically send the Blues down.

How many points do Blues need?

47: Blues will stay up with one more point as long as Sheffield Wednesday lose to both West Brom and Sunderland, and Huddersfield fail to win either of their remaining matches, due to their superior goal difference.

48: Provided Huddersfield take a maximum of four points from their final two games, including a draw against Blues, then Gary Rowett’s team would survive on goal difference if Wednesday only take one point from their final two matches.

49: A win at Huddersfield will be enough for Blues provided Wednesday don’t win another match. Blues will stay up on 49 points if Plymouth or Blackburn lose both of their remaining matches.

50: Four more points will be enough if Wednesday lose one of their remaining two matches due to Blues’ goal difference.

52: Blues will need to win both of their remaining games to stay up if Wednesday take four points and Plymouth and Blackburn record at least one win.
