Birmingham City player was named the biggest flop in the Championship with an astonishing statistic

One Birmingham City player is the largest underachiever in the entire Sky Bet Championship, according to recent projected goals statistics.

Birmingham City’s season has been a mixed bag thus far; under John Eustace, they rose to the pinnacles of the top six before falling into the bottom half under Wayne Rooney. According to a recently-released dataset, goalscoring wasn’t much of a problem at the start of the campaign, but it has since become so, and one player in particular is to blame.

This season, Scott Hogan has not been performing up to par. In previous seasons, he was a rather clinical goal scorer for the Blues, averaging one every three games. The Irishman has only scored once in 13 games, leaving him hanging out to dry by some Blues supporters. It turns out that he is really the top underperformer in the entire Sky Bet Championship in 2023–2024, which only makes things worse.

BetVictor has calculated the overall underperformance or overperformance statistics by analyzing each player’s goals scored and predicted goals figure. With 3.5 xG and only one goal converted, Hogan leads the former group and has an underperformance of -2.5. Next, both at -2.2, are Queens Park Rangers’ Sinclair Armstrong and Coventry City’s Haji Wright.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Norwich City’s star player Jon Rowe, who has only amassed 2.3 xG yet has scored seven goals. With an overperformance of +4.7, the winger outperforms Sunderland wideman Jack Clarke (+3.0) and West Bromwich Albion midfielder John Swift (+4.1). The Blues will be hoping that sooner rather than later, Hogan can begin to turn things around.

  • Nathan Broadhead (Ipswich): 6 goals from 3.6 xG means an overperformance of +2.4.
  • Arnór Sigurdsson (Blackburn): 3 goals from 0.7 xG means an overperformance of +2.3.

Championship’s biggest underperfomers

  • Scott Hogan (Birmingham): 1 goal from 3.5 xG means an underperformance of -2.5.
