Birmingham City player agrees to sign after earlier rejecting Tottenham

Rico Browne, a Birmingham City defender, has agreed to terms on a new contract, Football Insider understands.

Browne, 20, is expected to prolong his stay at St Andrews and sign fresh terms, since his current contract expires in the summer of 2024.

The centre-back has had tryouts with Premier League clubs, but has dedicated his future to the club following outstanding performances in the Blues’ junior ranks and on loan.

In February 2021, Football Insider was told by reliable sources that Browne went on trial at West Ham United, but the move never happened.

He also turned down an offer from Tottenham, with Football Insider reporting in April 2022 that the Lilywhites verbally offered him an 18-month contract, but he chose to stay with Birmingham.

The Blues’ academy graduate was even on Manchester United’s radar last year, with Football Insider reporting in April that the Red Devils were monitoring his situation at St Andrew’s.

Browne is currently on loan at Rushall Olympic in the National League North, the sixth tier.

He moved last winter and has started 17 games for the league.

During his short time at the West Midlands club, the 2003-born star has scored one goal and provided two assists from the back.

While he is a centre-back by trade, he has also played as a defensive midfielder for Rushall this season.

He has yet to make a senior appearance for Birmingham, but he was a regular for their under-21 and under-17 teams before his loan move.

They are next in action against last-place Rotherham United on Saturday (20 April).
