Birmingham City are interested in signing Celtic’s Bosun Lawal this summer, but it’s uncertain whether he’ll depart Parkhead during the window.

The 21-year-old joined the Scottish champions from Watford in 2023, spending his first year with the club’s B squad, where he primarily played center defense.

Last season, Lawal was loaned to Fleetwood Town, and despite the Cod Army’s relegation, he thrived, notably in midfield.

He scored six goals for the team and impressed with his power and ball skills as he drove forward.

Birmingham City interested in Bosun Lawal

As a result, some Celtic fans believe Lawal should be given a chance to challenge for a first-team spot under Brendan Rodgers this season, and the manager did laud the player after his performance in a friendly against Ayr on Friday night.

However, Lawal will face a difficult task in breaking into the starting lineup, with Callum McGregor, Tomoki Iwata, Reo Hatate, and Matt O’Riley among the midfield alternatives ahead of him in the pecking order.

So, another move cannot be ruled out just yet, and the Daily Record reports that the Blues are working up a bid for Lawal, with Dutch side Fortuna Sittard also keeping an eye on the issue.

Bosun Lawal could flourish at Birmingham City

Of course, new Birmingham manager Chris Davies has a link to Celtic, having previously worked under Rodgers, and he has spent the entirety of his coaching career with the Northern Irishman.

Even if he wasn’t with the Glasgow giants when Lawal was recruited, you can be confident that he is aware of his abilities through Rodgers and how the club views him.

From Birmingham’s perspective, bringing Lawal to St. Andrew’s, whether permanently or on loan, would be a huge coup.

He was a shining light in a dismal Fleetwood club last season, and his experience in League One means he understands what the level is all about, and you would expect Lawal to improve even more with a squad looking to battle for promotion.

Furthermore, Lawal fits the profile of the type of acquisition Blues are seeking for, since he is a young, energetic player who will help execute Davies’ high-intensity playing style.

Birmingham City’s summer transfer plans

This prospective transaction is expected to take some time because several Celtic players have yet to return for pre-season, and Rodgers will want to make a decision on the youngster during the next few weeks.

However, it once again underscores Blues’ ambition this summer, and fans will be pleased with how the window is unfolding, with the club already making several eye-catching signings, most notably Emil Hansson and Alfie May, who will offer creativity and goals to the team.

There is still work to be done, but Davies is putting together a strong team with the goal of returning Birmingham to the Championship at the first try.
