A warning has been sent to the incoming Birmingham City owners by Don Goodman.
The transfer of ownership of the Blues earlier this year, with Tom Wagner taking charge of the Championship team, pleased the club’s supporters.
Later, Wagner offered Tom Brady a small portion of his stock to enlist the former NFL player in his endeavor.
But when John Eustace was fired in favor of Wayne Rooney in October, fan feeling shifted against the American billionaire.
Rooney was not as competitive as he had been under the previous manager, and Eustace was well-liked by the supporters.
A warning to Birmingham City’s owners
Goodman feels that since Todd Boehly took over at Chelsea in 2022, he has made mistakes that Wagner needs to learn from.
The 57-year-old has suggested that the Birmingham owners hire football experts with greater knowledge of the game to manage the team on a daily basis.
Don Goodman stated, “The owners probably got a bit excited,” in an interview with BoyleSports, which provides the most recent NFL betting.
“Tom Brady is involved with them.”
“They have asked themselves, ‘Who is the biggest name in football right now?'” I doubt that they have heeded the counsel of football enthusiasts.
“They have Craig Gardner there in some capacity, but if the owners say, ‘We want Wayne Rooney,’ how much resistance will Craig Gardner put up?”
“While investment in owners like these is welcome, I believe they should try to involve football people and understand the game.”
“I thought they were a little naive in relieving John Eustace and immediately replacing him with Wayne Rooney.”
“Wrexham, because that’s what people compare American owners to, has Shaun Harvey and Les Reed in the background.”
“These are football people who have been in the game for decades and will be there to guide and advise them.”
“I don’t know how much of that the Birmingham owners have had.
“Even when you look at Chelsea with Todd Boehly – he walked in, became sporting director, and started buying all these players, it was a little scattergun.”
“I’m not sure how much football advice he was receiving at the time, but it appears to have subsided now.”
“Birmingham need some footballing intelligence in the background.”
Birmingham have dropped to 15th in the Championship table under Rooney, after being in the top six before Eustace’s departure.
The Midlands club’s next match is against Coventry City on Friday night at the CBS Arena.
A big January ahead for Birmingham City
Rooney is under pressure to deliver results, with fans expressing their displeasure at the moment.
Given the significance of his coming, the owners will feel compelled to support him, which will almost certainly result in some January expenditure.
However, Birmingham must exercise caution, as the previous owners demonstrated how dangerous things can get when money is squandered.
