Birmingham City in talks with Wrexham target over possible move

According to reporter Alan Nixon’s Patreon, Birmingham City is in talks with Brighton about a prospective trade for Marc Leonard.

Birmingham City want to sign the midfielder this summer as they prepare for life in League One following their relegation from the Championship. They dropped out of the second tier last season, along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

Leonard, 22, is in high demand ahead of the upcoming transfer season and must decide where he wants to go next. TEAMtalk claims that ambitious League Two promotion winners Wrexham are interested in him, while Hull City, Plymouth Argyle, and Preston have also been listed as prospective suitors.

In the most recent update on his status, journalist Nixon said on Patreon that the Blues want to attract him to the Midlands as they strive to get out of the third division at the first opportunity. Following Gary Rowett’s interim term as manager, they are still looking for a replacement.

If Birmingham City can beat off competition from elsewhere to sign Leonard, he would be a standout addition.

He is a decent age, has the ability to develop, and would provide skill and vitality to their midfield.

The Scotsman has a year left on his contract with Brighton, but his chances of breaking into their Premier League first squad are minimal due to the quantity of talent available at his position. As a result, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him go out the exit door.

Northampton Town signed him on loan in 2022, and he helped them gain promotion from League Two last season. He then returned to Sixfields for another stint, adjusting well to life in the higher leagues.

Leonard made 97 appearances for Brady’s team in all competitions to help his development, scoring six goals.

He will be weighing up his options and deciding whether he wants to depart the AMEX Stadium.

Birmingham City would be a fascinating project to be a part of, but they will have to compete with Wrexham, Hull City, Plymouth Argyle, and Preston for his services.
