Birmingham City is leading the fight to recruit Rangers defender Connor Goldson this summer.

According to Football Insider, the Glasgow club is increasingly inclined to accept a bid for the centre-back during the current transfer window.

Goldson has been with the Scottish giants since 2018, arriving from Brighton to become an important member of the first-team squad.

During his stint with the Premier League club, he has made 192 league appearances and helped them win their first league title in ten years under Steven Gerrard in 2021 (all data from Fbref).

However, his time at Ibrox could come to an end this summer due to interest from Birmingham and other clubs.

Connor Goldson transfer latest amid Birmingham City interest

Birmingham were reported earlier this summer to be interested in signing Goldson as they prepare for life in League One.

The Blues are trying to construct a team capable of achieving automatic promotion back to the Championship on their first attempt, with the club poised to compete in English football’s third tier for the first time since 1995.

Chris Davies has been appointed manager following Tony Mowbray’s official exit at the end of the season.

Goldson has been with the Rangers first team squad in the Netherlands this summer for pre-season, but he may have already played his final game for the club if Birmingham can reach an agreement on a fee with the Premiership outfit.

Birmingham City’s busy summer so far

Birmingham have already made several acquisitions this summer, as Davies seeks to develop a club capable of competing for a top two berth in League One next year.

The Blues have already signed Emil Hansson, Alfie May, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, and Ryan Allsop.

If the two clubs can reach an agreement, Goldson could shortly join them as the newest member.

The Blues have until August 30th to complete any outstanding transfers before the calendar year ends.

Defensive additions will be welcome at Birmingham City

Birmingham will need to strengthen its defensive lineup this summer, and Goldson, if acquired, would provide a wealth of experience.

However, the Blues should not break the money to buy a 31-year-old centre-back, as the core of this club should be youthful and ready to compete in the Championship in the next two or three years.

Goldson will help them regain promotion to the second division, but he is not a genuine long-term alternative to help them compete for promotion to the Premier League over the following five seasons.

It would be a tremendous coup to persuade someone of his caliber to play in League One, but Birmingham should be wary of spending too much for someone in the latter stages of their career.
