Birmingham City given green light to sign Liverpool released playmaker

Birmingham City attempted to finalize a transfer for Mateusz Musialowski of Liverpool during the January transfer window, but the transaction did not materialize.

Mateusz Musialowski, the playmaker who was on Birmingham City’s radar in the January transfer window, will leave Liverpool at the conclusion of his contract, the club has announced.

Musialowski, who is from Poland, was seen by Liverpool scouts and joined their academy as a teenager in 2020. The forward was due to join Austrian club TSV Hartberg in the summer, but the deal fell through at the last minute, and he ended up staying at Anfield.

The 20-year-old is eager for regular football but has always appeared to be a long way from securing it on Merseyside, where even academy teammates like Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns have been given opportunities ahead of him, let alone the star-studded first-team group.

Musialowski did have one appearance under departing boss Jurgen Klopp, coming on in the second half of the Reds’ 11-2 Europa League victory over Sparta Prague. Musialowski replaced fellow youngster Bobby Clark, son of former Blues manager Lee, with less than 20 minutes remaining.

When Klopp talked after the win, he showered Musialowski with praise and underlined how great of a player he considered him to be: “Mateusz is an exceptional talent, I really think he’s now ready.”

But that is Musialowski’s lone first-team experience at Anfield, despite scoring in three consecutive EFL Trophy games last season – a win over Morecambe and defeats to Blackpool and Barrow. Now, the teenager, dubbed the ‘Polish Messi’ due to his style of play, is looking for his next challenge.

Along with Musialowski, Liverpool has announced the departures of Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne, and Cody Pennington.

It is claimed that the Blues came extremely close to signing Musialowski during the January transfer window, as then-manager Tony Mowbray sought to expand his squad’s options. Blues signed Alex Pritchard, Andre Dozzell, and Paik Seung-ho in the winter market.
