Birmingham City is considering a late loan transfer for Chelsea attacking midfielder Omari Kellyman, according to Football Insider.

Birmingham City are still looking for fresh additions on deadline day, despite having one of the most exciting summer transfer windows in League One history.

The Blues have spent at a level never seen in the third tier. Their ambitious and affluent owners have thrown their whole support behind new manager Chris Davies and will be adamant that they return to the Championship at the first opportunity.

They have till 11 p.m. to finish any remaining business. Rumours now suggest a new name.

According to Football Insider, Birmingham City are preparing a loan move for Chelsea midfielder Omari Kellyman.

The offensive midfielder only joined Chelsea this summer, moving from Aston Villa for an eye-catching £19 million. However, he could be loaned out at the last minute to obtain senior experience away from the Premier League’s top clubs.

The Blues are racing against the clock to finalize a loan agreement for Kellyman.

Is Kellyman needed?

Looking at the Birmingham City roster, you can’t help but believe that Kellyman isn’t really needed at this point.

The key for him heading out would be to obtain senior experience, which he may not get given St. Andrew’s attacking midfield depth. They have signed Willum Thor Willumsson and Luke Harris (on loan) in that region, and Tyler Roberts and Marc Leonard would be comfortable there as well.

The need for depth at St. Andrew’s is great, but Kellyman’s move does not appear to benefit either the player or the club.

High expectations

Birmingham City will be expected to storm their way back to the Championship after spending so much money on signings throughout the summer.

League One is guaranteed to throw up some surprises, and clubs will be motivated to make things more difficult for the Blues than they could have dreamed. However, with the money spent and quality on board, Davies merely needs to deliver promotion.

It is expected that they will be promoted automatically as league champions. Anything less will be disappointing, especially if they can add Kellyman or other talents to the roster.
