Birmingham City contract appears to be an excellent decision by QPR

The Hoops have battled in the Championship this season, but with 13 games remaining, it appears like they are improving their play and achieving better results.

Marti Cifuentes, a Spanish manager, took over the club in October following Gareth Ainsworth’s terrible start to the season, but he, too, struggled to produce results with this QPR squad.

The Hoops have been in the drop zone for quite some time, battling for second-tier survival.

The January transfer window arrived at an ideal time for QPR this season, allowing Cifuentes to bring in his own players and begin to establish his own personality at the club.

In order to make those acquisitions, he had to make a major choice that allowed him to free up some salary space. So far, this appears to be a very wise choice by the club.

In addition to focusing on new faces, QPR loaned three first-team players away in January to clear up room in the squad. Andre Dozzell, a center midfielder, was among the players who left Loftus Road.

The 24-year-old was hardly a marginal player for the Hoops, having made 22 league starts in the Championship this season, so allowing him to depart for Birmingham City, a fellow second-tier team, was undoubtedly risky.

However, it now appears to be a wise decision for all involved. On the one hand, Birmingham will gain a left-footed central midfielder with Championship experience on loan, while QPR will clear up room for Marti Cifuentes’ first signings.

According to Capology, Dozzell makes an estimated £11,154 per week, so the Hoops would have been relieved to lift part of that burden and make place in the wage bill.

QPR’s Successful January Window

As three players left on loan, QPR signed four new ones, as Cifuentes sought to establish his own personality at the club. Isaac Hayden, Joe Hodge, Michael Frey, and Lucas Andersen were the fresh additions to the QPR squad, with Frey and Andersen securing permanent contracts.

All four have been closely involved with the first team in recent weeks, but Lucas Andersen has emerged as the standout signing thus far.

The Danish attacking midfielder has only started one league game for the Hoops, coming on as a substitute twice, but has already contributed two assists. The first was for fellow new addition Michael Frey, while the second was for star player Ilias Chair.

On Saturday, Andersen not only assisted the game’s sole goal against Bristol City, but he was also named Player of the Match.

QPR have struggled for goals this season, which has contributed significantly to their relegation, but with the addition of Lucas Andersen, Cifuentes has brought in a player who knows how to assist goals at crucial moments, which could be a huge boost in their relegation battle.

Arguably, the club would not have been able to acquire Andersen if they had not loaned Dozzell to Birmingham City, freeing up wage bill space, therefore this now appears to be a very wise decision.

QPR are only one point from safety and will be hoping that performances from Lucas Andersen will be enough to keep them out of the relegation zone.
