Birmingham City will be hoping for automatic promotion back to the Championship on their first attempt this year.

Chris Davies was hired manager over the summer, with the goal of leading the squad to a top-two finish in League One.

The Blues had a busy transfer period, with the signing of Jay Stansfield attracting a lot of attention due to the high fee.

Despite the market’s closure, there is still room for one more addition, as free agents can still be registered.

Birmingham registered 21 outfield players out of an allowed total of 22, indicating that the club might still make a free agent signing.

Birmingham free agent signing touted

The Birmingham fan pundit for FLW believes that signing Brandon Williams as a free agent would be a wise decision.

He believes that left-back is an area that needs to be improved, and that the 24-year-old would be an excellent fit for Davies’ style of play.

“I think the one player for me would be someone like Brandon Williams,” Gibbs said, according to a source.

“I say it because I believe we are now lacking in left-back depth, and we rely heavily on Alex Cochrane.

“I believe the Bristol Street Motors game against Walsall last week demonstrated that, as Brandon Khela, a right-footer, played at left-back and was at fault for the goal.”

“Lee Buchanan will be out for some period; he is a defensive left-back similar to Cochrane.

“Whereas I believe someone like Williams exemplifies the type of play that the manager wants to bring in.

“I think he’d fit in fairly perfectly as an attacking left-back, so he’d be an excellent acquisition.

“I think at League One level too he’d do exceptionally well.”

Brandon Williams’ Manchester United exit

Williams is presently a free agent, having left Manchester United at the end of last season.

The defender spent the season on loan at Ipswich Town, where he helped the club earn Premier League promotion with 15 Championship matches (all statistics from Fbref).

However, he is now without a club and might move to Birmingham if approached.

It remains to be seen whether he is willing to move down to League One.

Brandon Williams signing would be strong

Williams was unable to contend for regular playing time at Ipswich last year, but he was still an important squad player for a team that finished second in the Championship.

He is also only 24, but has gained vital experience at a high level and would have a lot to give a team in the second or third tier.

If Birmingham can persuade him to move down to League One, he would be a valuable addition.

Williams’ offensive abilities make him a good fit for Davies’ team, and he can play on either wing, which is a crucial quality to have in the squad.
