Following a brief upswing in performance under new manager Tony Mowbray, Birmingham City is reportedly aiming to bolster the team before the January transfer window closes.

The Blues had a terrible run of results following Wayne Rooney’s appointment at St. Andrew’s back in October. The former Derby County manager lost his job after a miserable 3-0 loss against Leeds United at Elland Road. In his 15 games in command across all competitions, he only managed three victories.

With one of the youngest squads in the division, his successor has experience leading Sunderland to unparalleled postseason success. He is also a tried and tested player in the second tier of English football.

Mowbray led Birmingham City to a four-game winning streak after taking over as manager earlier in the month. The team has drawn twice and won twice in that time. The Blues are currently eight points above the relegation zone, but their league standing remains unaltered.

Birmingham City is reportedly trying to strengthen their midfield in order to prevent getting drawn back into a relegation fight later in the season. The Midlands club is reportedly close to finalizing a deal for South Korea international Paik Seung-ho, according to Sports Donga via Birmingham World.

The 26-year-old, who attended Barcelona’s prestigious academy, has had a fantastic career, winning the K League 1 in 2021 with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, earning 15 caps for his country, and even taking home the league’s Player of the Month title in May.

In addition, the former Girona player scored in his lone appearance on the biggest stage of football—the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar—during a 4-1 loss to Brazil in the Round of 16.

Paik Seung-ho, nevertheless, is presently free agent after being released from his Jeonbuk contract this month. He has been negotiating with Birmingham City, while it is also rumored that Sunderland has expressed interest in signing him.

Paik’s possible transfer to Birmingham may be a reaction to reports linking James Jordan, a midfielder, to West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United, or possibly Serie A teams Atalanta and Fiorentina.

It may be a very good coup for the Blues, especially because Paik will be joining on a free agent. Paik is a player with a great deal of experience playing at the highest level in Europe and around the world.
