Ben Johnson showed up to the Lions because he botched interviews, according to an NFL insider.

Ben Johnson will return to the Detroit Lions for the second consecutive year. Johnson was a popular choice for many teams both years he was available as a coach. Johnson, the driving force behind the Lions’ attack, was widely expected to become a coach. Johnson did, however, return to Detroit in both years.

Some may see this as allegiance to the Lions. Perhaps Johnson wants to wrap out his tale with the club he developed. According to USA Today’s Commanders Wire, his interview with the Washington Commanders may provide insight into why he did not receive any HC assignments. According to Garofolo’s assessment, Johnson’s failure to land the Commander’s position might be attributed to his own conduct.

“I don’t think he (Lions OC Ben Johnson) interviewed particularly well,” Garafolo told the Detroit News. “Johnson withdrew, and he did so just as Washington was about to meet with him, which did not sit well with the Washington organization. However, I believe he withdrew from two coaching searches because he would not have received the position regardless. So, it’s the old ‘I’m not fired, I quit’ issue. So I don’t think he really impressed anyone during the interview process.”

That’s hardly exactly an impressive review, is it? Johnson is a skilled coach who built the league’s most inventive offense from almost nothing. The Lions are fortunate to have him. However, X’s and O’s account for only half of a head coaching position. Character is equally crucial in coaching, and the Commanders did not appear impressed with his demeanor.

According to Lions head coach Dan Campbell, Johnson initially returned to the organization to gain coaching experience. Perhaps teaching with the ultimate player’s coach, Campbell, will allow the OC to learn more about the other side of coaching.
