Atlanta Braves placed Spencer Strider on the 15-day injured list on Sunday

The Atlanta Braves placed Spencer Strider on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, one day after revealing that the star right-hander has an ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his pitching arm.

In a matching move, the Braves recalled right-handed pitcher Allan Winans from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Winans, 28, could serve as a long reliever in the coming days or start in Strider’s place in the rotation Wednesday against the New York Mets.

Last season, he was 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA, eight walks, and 34 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings across six games (all starts) for Atlanta.

Strider, 25, abandoned Friday’s start against the Arizona Diamondbacks after four innings due to elbow soreness.

Strider will be evaluated by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas, on an undetermined date, the team announced Saturday.

Strider, who was fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting last season, led the majors with 20 victories and 281 strikeouts in 186 2/3 innings. In his first two starts this year, he has only thrown nine innings and his velocity has dropped a few miles per hour. On Friday, he struck out four and walked three in the Braves’ 6-5 10-inning victory.

Strider’s ERA in his two outings is 7.00, more than doubling his career mark of 3.47.

Strider had Tommy John elbow surgery in 2019 while at Clemson, and a second treatment would likely keep him out for at least a year.
