Another Ohio State DB transferring to ex-defensive coordinator’s program

Another veteran Ohio State football defensive back is moving east to join the former defensive coordinator of the Buckeyes.

Cam Martinez, a fourth-year safety, confirmed his commitment to Boston College on Saturday. He joins cornerback Ryan Turner, who pledged to Jeff Hafley’s squad on December 15.

In Ryan Day’s first season as head coach, Hafley served as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. He left to become the head coach at Boston College, where he has won six games in three of the last four seasons. On Thursday, the Eagles will face SMU in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl.

On Nov. 30, Martinez was one of the first OSU players to express his intention to use the NCAA transfer site. This season, he had two tackles in three games as a reserve safety. His adaptability has landed him in a variety of situations throughout his career, with his most significant duty this season coming as the sixth defensive back in dime packages.

Martinez has also voiced a desire to play offensively at his final transfer destination. According to the 247 Sports composite, the Muskegon, Michigan native was a four-star prospect ranked 323rd overall in the 2020 class. As a run-first quarterback, he was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year, rushing for 2,214 yards and 36 touchdowns while also throwing for 1,258 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He is the tenth former Buckeye to announce a destination among the 14 scholarship players who entered the portal this cycle.
