Andy Murray has retired from tennis following his doubles defeat at the Olympics, but he may take on a coaching job for one of the country’s most promising athletes.

Andy Murray has already shown his interest in tutoring Emma Raducanu as the great nears the end of his remarkable career. Murray quits from tennis with three Grand Slam singles titles after losing in the quarterfinals of the Olympics men’s doubles with Dan Evans to Team USA’s Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz.

The Team GB combo defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel in their first match before defeating Belgium’s Joran Vliegen and Sander Gille. However, Paul and Fritz proved too much for the combination in the quarterfinals, defeating them 6-2, 6-4. While the Olympics appear to be Murray’s final professional appearance on the court, he could transition into a teaching role.

Murray was invited by the Tennis Channel in 2022 to select four players to coach. To which he said, “A female player, Emma Raducanu. Male player – among [Carlos] Alcaraz, [Stefanos] Tsitsipas, and [Jack] Draper.”

A cooperation between Raducanu and Murray may help Emma advance in her already remarkable career, but it is unlikely to happen. Not only did the 21-year-old withdraw from competing with Murray in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon this summer citing to injury concerns, but Murray has already begun instructing 17-year-old Charlie Robertson.

Last month, Andy’s mother Judy published a photo of the two side by side on the courts, writing: “Charlie Robertson: the teenage Scot following in Andy’s footsteps will travel to New York next month to participate in the boys singles at the US Open. He’s rated 25 in the world juniors and has recently spent a week training alongside Andy as he prepares for the Olympics.

“It’s been 20 years since Andy won the US Open junior title in 2004, and it’s encouraging to see him invest in the next generation. There is no better or faster method to learn than by working with someone who has been there and done it. “Go, Charlie.

Sue Barker mentioned Murray’s earlier desire in pursuing a coaching career during her Monday Mile with Aimee Fuller. Speaking on The Walking podcast, she said: “Do you know, it was fascinating Aims when he said ‘I’d like to be in the coaching box’, and I thought ‘I wonder if he’s got a young kid that he’s got his eye on that he wants to nurture and move ahead’ because that would be amazing.

“Can you image having Andy Murray as your coach? He was the ideal tactician, and he knew how to play the key points perhaps better than anyone else. And to have him in your corner, teaching you tennis and mindset…oh my word.”

Raducanu left Murray waiting when she withdrew from the mixed doubles competition at Wimbledon this summer, after he was ousted in the men’s doubles with brother Jamie. Andy had to withdraw from the singles tournament since he was not fully recovered from his back surgery.

Raducanu finally opted out of the 2024 Olympic Games in order to focus on her physique and fitness ahead of the US Open later this month.
