Analyzing Lions’ signing of DL

Lions bolster defensive line with addition of veteran.

After the first 48 hours of free agency, a part of the Detroit Lions’ fandom expressed concerned over the apparent absence of a “splash” signing in free agency.

Following a successful 2023 season, many anticipated Detroit to strengthen its secondary and defensive line.

Despite general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell’s statements that the organization will take a measured approach, numerous fans voiced disappointment that the team did not do enough to strengthen the team.

Adding D.J. Reader gives Detroit a strong run defense and offers Alim McNeill more support this season.

Prior to his season-ending quad rupture, the 29-year-old was performing well on the football field.

In 2023, Reader played 535 snaps and received an 82.2 PFF grade. He finished with 34 tackles and a sack.

While there are questions about the former Bengals’ health, Detroit’s front office must have felt at ease. The team offered him a two-year contract of up to $27 million.

Reader noted throughout his rehabilitation about the numerous obstacles and challenges that come with recovering from a serious accident.Reader underwent a similar recuperation approach several years ago after tearing his left quad in 2020.

“Going in and out of rehab all the time and always spending your time doing that process is tough,” Reader said when questioned about the possibility of retiring after being wounded. “It can be mentally taxing.” But, in my head, I feel like I still have a lot of excellent ball in me. I felt like this was one of my best years. “I don’t want to end it that way.”
