Allan Winans of the Braves went into battle against the Mets

With a damaged ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow that occurred last Saturday, star player Spencer Strider was placed on the 15-day injured list, and the Atlanta Braves are eager to hear more.

On Wednesday night, as the Braves continue their four-game series against the visiting New York Mets, right-hander Allan Winans has been selected to start in Strider’s stead.

The Braves won’t know more about Strider’s prognosis until the weekend because he is having an evaluation this week.

Manager of Atlanta Brian Snitker stated, “I’m not sure what the course of treatment is going to be.” “They’re currently debating what to do as the following move. All I know is that.”

With the Braves last season, Winans (1-2, 5.29 ERA in 2023) made his main league debut and started six games. On Sunday, the 28-year-old was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Winans, who was selected by the Mets in the 17th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, made his Gwinnett debut on April 2 against the Louisville Bats and gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

After falling to the Mets 8-7 in the first game of the series, Atlanta defeated them 6-5 on Tuesday. Ronald Acuna Jr.’s two singles, three runs, and three stolen bases were crucial to the win.

Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies stated, “He can do a lot of good things on the basepaths when he gets on and gets everybody going.” “Like you saw tonight, he stole three bags and scored three times.”

Left fielder Jarred Kelenic gave Atlanta another boost in the third inning when he struck out Harrison Bader trying to turn a leadoff single into a double. After playing for the Seattle Mariners for the previous three seasons, Kelenic has made it to base safely in ten of his first eleven games with the Braves.

On Wednesday, left-hander Jose Quintana (0-1, 2.61 ERA) will take the mound for New York. In five and a third innings pitched, he gave up one run on five hits in a no-decision last Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.

Quintana, 35, is in the latter year of a two-year, $26 million deal. In 13 starts the previous season, he was 3-6 with a 3.57 ERA.

In his eight career outings versus Atlanta, Marcell Ozuna is 10-for-22 with one home run against Quintana, who is 2-5 with a 6.75 ERA. In his 18 at-bats, Quintana has allowed Braves first baseman Matt Olson to only muster four hits.

On Tuesday, Pete Alonso attempted to help New York overcome a 6-0 deficit with a three-run home run. The game was ended by Alonso striking out with a runner at first base after the Mets added two more runs in the ninth inning.

“I believed there was a fight throughout the entire game,” stated Carlos Mendoza, the manager of New York. It says a lot about this team’s character for us to put the winning run on base in the ninth inning after falling behind early. I’m liking what we’re seeing offensively.”

J.D. Martinez’s absence from the Mets’ offense will extend while he attends to his lower back pain.

After hitting.271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBIs with the Los Angeles Dodgers the previous season, Martinez, 36, was signed as a free agent. He wants to debut with the Mets before the end of the month, having had a cortisone injection on Tuesday.

“We’ll see (in) how the next 48 to 72 hours he responds to the treatment, and then we’ll go from there,” Mendoza stated. “However, in terms of at-bats and other similar situations, his timing and technique feel excellent. Thus, I’m not really worried about this.”
