All major league eligible players are offered contracts by the Twins

Among them were recent draft picks Alex Kirilloff and Ryan Jeffers, as well as veterans Kyle Farmer and Willi Castro.

Before Friday’s 7 p.m. deadline, the Twins tendered contracts to every player who qualified for major league arbitration, including Kyle Farmer, the team’s most uncertain player.

While some of the choices, like those involving Alex Kirilloff and Ryan Jeffers, weren’t really decisions at all, there were some concerns about other players, especially Farmer. Ultimately, the Twins decided not to tender minor league relievers Jovani Moran, who is scheduled to have Tommy John surgery, and Ronny Henriquez, leaving only Kirilloff, Jeffers, Farmer, Caleb Thielbar, Willi Castro, Nick Gordon, and Jorge Alcala. The Twins could re-sign both to minor league deals.

Since Farmer moved to Minnesota last year, the Twins have been very complimentary of him due to both his on-field performance and his presence in the clubhouse. However, MLB Trade Rumors estimates that he is owed $6.6 million in arbitration, which raised the possibility that he would be a trade or non-tender candidate.

That’s a significant sum given that the Twins intend to reduce payroll from what it was in 2023 and that he isn’t anticipated to be a starter. The Twins could shop the infielder on the trade market while they tendered him a contract.

Alcala, who missed a significant portion of the season due to an arm injury, and Gordon, who is expected to receive roughly $1 million each in arbitration. Gordon suffered a broken shin after fouling a ball off his leg in May. That puts two players whose spots on the 26-man roster at the start of the 2019–20 season just above the major league minimum.

Castro became one of the Twins’ most valuable players after signing with them as a minor league free agent last offseason. He played in 124 games at various positions. Next year, he should make about $3.2 million.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Thielbar, a left-hander who finished the previous season with a 3.23 earned-run average, is projected to make about $3 million, Jeffers to make about $2.3 million, and Kirilloff to make about $1.7 million.
