Alabama lands portal commitment from Charlotte DB transfer

Alabama football was looking for help at defensive back through the transfer portal.

The Crimson Tide did just that on Monday, when Kameron Howard, previously of Charlotte, committed to joining the team through the transfer portal.

Howard revealed his decision on social media.

“I will be taking my talents to the University of Alabama,” Howard said in the post.

He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Tide. Howard started two games and appeared in all twelve for the 49ers last season.

Charlotte’s 5-foot-11, 189-pound safety recorded 38 tackles and two interceptions in 2023. He’ll help Alabama fill one of its thinnest position groupings, which had defections due to the NFL Draft and Nick Saban’s retirement in January.

UA head coach Kalen DeBoer was questioned near the close of spring practice about where he wanted to add players to the roster during the spring portal window, and defensive back was one of the positions he cited.

“We’re probably a guy short or so,” DeBoer added. “Offensive line, and we’re definitely a person short. Just based on the statistics you generally see and where we want to go. So I’m not saying we’ll check into it and see what happens, but you never know.

The spring portal entry window will remain open until Tuesday. Players can still sign out of the portal after that date, but undergraduate registration will be closed.
