Alabama has an outstanding sophomore defensive back…

Samari Matthews reported an offer from Alabama football Wednesday via social media.

In Cornelius, North Carolina, Matthews attends William A. Hough High School. As a sophomore and member of the 2026 recruiting class, he is rated as a four-star recruit by many recruiting sources. He has over 20 offers, including Florida State, South Carolina, North Carolina, and others.

When Alabama tight end coach Joe Cox visited his high school, he notified him of his offer from the Crimson Tide.

“I was very excited and shocked,” Matthews said. “It was hard to believe at first. Alabama is a great program, and I loved everything about them growing up, watching them. It’s just an offer everyone wanted as a little kid.”

Matthews’ length and response ability as a defensive back at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds impressed throughout the 2023 football season. He shown his ability to be effective against the run and play underneath by closing on the football quickly while standing out in coverage by twisting and sprinting with wide receivers and making plays on the ball in coverage.

“I think I do a good job at just shutting down my side and making teams only attack one side of the field and at just being a leader to my teammates,.” Matthews explained.
