Alabama football allegedly tries to poach Georgia’s director of recruiting for a lateral move

As Kalen DeBoer continues to build his Alabama staff, he has his sights set on a huge move within the SEC.

The 49-year-old head coach is attempting to grab one of the most significant components of Georgia’s success.

According to Graham Coffey of TPL Georgia, the Crimson Tide has contacted David Cooper to evaluate his interest in a lateral move. Kalen DeBoer and company propose relocating the Bulldogs’ Director of Recruiting Relations to Tuscaloosa.

The 32-year-old was once considered a rising star in the recruiting industry. That’s no longer the case. He’s a star.

Cooper contributed significantly to Florida’s back-to-back top-10 classes in 2019 and 2020. Georgia has had a top-three class every year since his debut in 2021, and is presently ranked first for 2024.

Cooper’s departure from Kirby Smart’s staff to join DeBoer would be a major development.

There are some connections between DeBoer and Cooper. However, they have never collaborated directly.

Cooper played linebacker at Indiana from 2012 to 2014. William Inge was the Hoosiers’ defensive coordinator at the time. Inge later joined DeBoer’s staff at Washington and Fresno State. He may join the Alabama group in the following weeks.

In any case, it appears that DeBoer learned about Cooper by word of mouth. There has been initial conversation about leaving Smart and Georgia to recruit for Alabama.

Cooper’s potential lateral motion would likely go unnoticed by casual college football fans. However, those who are more familiar with the Bulldogs’ behind-the-scenes operations understand that it would be a significant acquisition.

Cooper’s current stance is unknown. If he jumps, it will be a statement move!
